Who they were
Beneath the grey water of the North Sea lies a drowned country: Doggerland, the vast plain of rivers and reed marshes that once joined Britain to the continent. These three men lived there in its final millennia — one of them, his bones tell, a fisher whose diet came almost wholly from the water that would one day take everything. Their remains returned to the world in fishermen's nets and dredged sand: a femur, a jaw, a single tooth, hauled from the seabed off the Dutch coast. Genetically they are the classic western hunter-gatherers of post-glacial Europe. Rising seas — hastened by the great Storegga tsunami — swallowed their homeland entirely by around 5500 BCE, making them citizens of a country that no longer exists.
