Who they were

For over a thousand years the last hunter-fishers of Denmark lived so well off the sea that they left their monuments in oyster shells: the køkkenmøddinger, kitchen middens piled by the fjords, layer upon layer of shells, fish bone, antler and flint. They paddled dugout canoes with clay hearths aboard, staked fish weirs of hazel into the mud, and coiled pointed-based pots long before they ever farmed — even trading for grain from the farmers to the south while wanting nothing of the farming life. Genetically they were the old Europe entire: dark-haired, mostly blue-eyed foragers unchanged for millennia, holding their world together until, within a few generations around 3900 BCE, the newcomers' fields finally swept it away. These individuals include kin buried at the very shell-heap that gave the culture its name.
