Who they were
At the end of the ninth century the Magyars rode into the Carpathian Basin, and within a generation their chiefs were being buried like steppe princes on a hill above the Tisza. The three cemeteries of Karos-Eperjesszög are the richest conquest-era burial ground known: men laid down with sabres, gilded sabretache plates, mounted belt sets, archery gear and their horses, dated almost to the year by Arab dirhams and Western coins still bright from the mint. Genetics traces the conquerors' core ancestry to an old steppe blend of Ugric Siberians, Sarmatians and descendants of the Asian Huns — already marrying into the local European majority within a generation or two. These riders come from Karos, Kenézlő, Sárrétudvari and the other great cemeteries of the conquest.
