In 480 BCE — by tradition, the same day as Thermopylae — the Greeks of Sicily crushed a Carthaginian army at Himera. Mass graves of the fallen were found beneath the battlefield, and their genomes held a surprise: many of the 'Greek' soldiers were mercenaries from as far away as the Baltic and the steppe.
