Who they were
In the sixth and seventh centuries, Slavic-speaking settlers crossed the Danube into a Balkans emptied by plague and war — the largest remaking of the peninsula's ancestry since the first farmers, and the origin of its Slavic languages. These early medieval genomes from Serbia and Croatia are the ancestors, in a direct genetic sense, of most South Slavic speakers alive today.
