Who they were
As Roman rule dissolved along the Danube, a new people took shape in its wake: the Baiuvarii, first named by chroniclers in the sixth century, ancestors of Bavaria itself. At Essenbach-Altheim near Landshut they buried their dead in one of the largest row-grave cemeteries in Bavaria — more than four hundred excavated graves in orderly lines, used continuously from the last Roman generations into the Merovingian age. These individuals are the local heart of that new people, farmers of northern and central European stock — while in the cemeteries around them lay women with artificially elongated skulls whose ancestry reached to the Balkans and beyond, brides drawn from far away as young Bavaria wove its first alliances.
