At its height the capital of the Roman Empire held a million people, and its cemeteries buried the whole world. These individuals come from the burial grounds of the imperial city and its orbit — the necropolis of Isola Sacra, where the merchants of Portus, Rome's great harbour, raised tombs inscribed with their trades; the cemeteries of Centocelle within the city's sprawl; and the towns of Latium from Praeneste to the Via Salaria.
