The Sarmatians were the horse-lords who inherited the western steppe from the Scythians — armoured lancers whose armed women fed Greek legends of the Amazons. On the Romanian plains they formed the living bridge between the Ural steppes and the Roman frontier, trading and raiding along the lower Danube for three centuries. Rome fought them, hired them, and finally settled them.
