What GEDmatch is

GEDmatch is a free genetic-genealogy site built around a global database of uploaded autosomal DNA: One-to-Many and One-to-One comparisons against other users, plus admixture (biogeographical ancestry) calculators. It answers a different question from Ancestrify — who among the living shares DNA with you — so this page is as much about scope as about features.

Everything in the right-hand column was read on gedmatch.com on the date below.

MethodThree methods, sold separately: formal qpAdm (ADMIXTOOLS 2, with a p-value), Global25 coordinate fitting (distances, nMonte-style admixture, PCA) and an Ancient Matches shared-segment scanOne-to-Many comparison against everyone on the site, One-to-One comparison, and admixture calculators for biogeographical ancestry
Who you are compared withAncient individuals from published burials (Ancient Matches) and the kits you upload together (Relative Finder). No cross-customer databaseOther GEDmatch users — a global database of uploaded autosomal DNA, which is the site's stated purpose
Runs on your raw fileYes — qpAdm, Ancient Matches and Relative Finder run on the raw export directlyYes — uploads from 23andMe, Ancestry, FamilyTreeDNA, Living DNA, MyHeritage and tellmeGen are listed
Whole-genome VCF inputYes — whole-genome sequencing VCF up to 1 GB on qpAdm and Ancient Matches (€10 add-on); converted to the panel's markers at upload, not storedNot stated on their site

Where each is the better choice

Choose GEDmatch to find and compare with living people who share DNA with you, across a large free database, with admixture calculators on the side.

Choose Ancestrify for ancient-DNA questions: a formal qpAdm model with published statistics, Global25 distances and admixture across six eras, matches against individual ancient people, whole-genome VCF input, and one-time pricing with EU hosting.

Ancestrify's side of the table is stated on qpAdm, Global25, Ancient Matches and the Model Lab; the other comparisons are Illustrative DNA, Vahaduo, Genoplot.

Questions

  • Does Ancestrify have a matching database like GEDmatch?

No, deliberately. GEDmatch's One-to-Many tool compares you with everyone on its site, which is the product. Ancestrify never matches customers against each other: Ancient Matches compares you with ancient individuals from published burials, and Relative Finder compares only the two to five kits uploaded together in one order.

  • Are GEDmatch's admixture calculators the same as Ancestrify's qpAdm?

No. Admixture calculators of that kind estimate biogeographical ancestry proportions and always return some breakdown. qpAdm is a statistical test with a p-value that can reject a model outright, and Ancestrify publishes that p-value with each source's standard error and z-score.

  • Can I use the same raw file on both?

Yes. Both accept the raw exports of the major consumer testing companies. Ancestrify additionally accepts a whole-genome sequencing VCF on qpAdm and Ancient Matches.

  • Which is better for finding living relatives?

GEDmatch, by design — that is what its database is for. Ancestrify's Relative Finder verifies how the specific people you upload are related to each other; it does not search for unknown relatives.

  • How were these facts checked?

Every cell in the GEDmatch column was read on gedmatch.com on the verification date shown on this page. Where a fact was not stated there, the cell says so.

Every published qpAdm model on Ancestrify carries its p-value, standard errors, z-scores and full outgroup set — the numbers that let you check it, not just read it.
