Who Gregor Mendel was
The father of genetics himself. Johann Mendel, a farmer's son from Silesia, took the name Gregor when he entered the Augustinian abbey of St Thomas in Brno, and in its garden between 1856 and 1863 he grew some 28,000 pea plants — patiently counting round seeds and wrinkled ones until he had uncovered the laws of inheritance the world would ignore for another thirty-five years. For his bicentenary, scientists in Brno lifted his coffin from beneath five stacked monks' coffins and read the genome of the man who first imagined that such a thing existed, confirming it was him with DNA from his own microscope, his glasses, and a hair pressed inside a favourite astronomy book. The friar who counted peas turned out to have carried variants for the kidney and heart disease that ended his life — written in the very code he discovered the grammar of.
