Kronan was the pride of the Swedish navy — the flagship, built to carry up to a hundred and twenty-six guns — until the first of June 1676. Turning to meet the Danish-Dutch fleet off Öland under too much sail, she heeled over, the sea poured through her open gunports, and her powder magazine tore her apart. Of some eight hundred and fifty men aboard, more than eight hundred died in minutes, the Admiral of the Realm among them. The wreck lay untouched on the seabed until Anders Franzén — the same man who found the Vasa — located her in 1980, opening one of the great underwater excavations of the world: thirty thousand artefacts, a hoard of gold coins, and the bones of her crew. This genome belongs to one of those men, an ordinary Swedish sailor of the age of empire.
