The Anatolian Neolithic farmers were the people of the earliest farming villages of central and western Anatolia — settlements such as Boncuklu, Çatalhöyük and Barcın — in the millennia after cereal cultivation and herding took hold in the Fertile Crescent. Ancient genomes from these sites form a tight, distinctive cluster that differs sharply from the hunter-gatherers of Europe and from the contemporary farmers of the Zagros (Mathieson et al. 2015; Lazaridis et al. 2016). The earliest of them show a striking continuity with local Epipalaeolithic foragers, suggesting agriculture was adopted in place rather than brought by migrants (Feldman et al. 2019).
This ancestry became the largest single ingredient of Neolithic Europe: farmers carrying it moved along the Danube and the Mediterranean coast from around 6500 BC, mixing only modestly with local hunter-gatherers along the way. Today it remains the dominant deep component in Sardinians and is substantial across the Mediterranean and the Balkans, thinning towards the north and east where later steppe-related ancestry took a larger share. In the model it sits closest to the Iranian Neolithic and Natufian sources, from which it is separated by a clear but not enormous genetic distance.
