Caucasus hunter-gatherers (CHG) are known from Late Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic individuals from the caves of western Georgia, first sequenced from Satsurblia and Kotias Klde (Jones et al. 2015). They form a lineage that separated from the western European hunter-gatherers deep in the last Ice Age and remained isolated through the glacial maximum, ending up closer to the early farmers of Iran than to anyone in Europe (Lazaridis et al. 2016).

CHG matters far beyond the Caucasus because it is roughly half of what later became steppe ancestry: the Bronze Age herders of the Pontic–Caspian steppe are modelled as a mixture of Eastern hunter-gatherers with a CHG-like southern population. Through them it spread across Europe and into South Asia, and it is also a substantial component in the Caucasus, Iran and Anatolia today. In the model it is closely related to the Iranian Neolithic source, and the two can be difficult to tell apart for genomes whose deep ancestry lies in the Near East.
