The Western Steppe Herders are the pastoralists of the Pontic–Caspian steppe from the Eneolithic through the Yamnaya horizon, sampled from the Samara, Kalmykia and Ukraine steppe. Their genomes are a roughly even blend of Eastern hunter-gatherer and Caucasus-related ancestry, formed on the steppe over the fifth and fourth millennia BC (Haak et al. 2015; Wang et al. 2019). Around 3000 BC this population expanded explosively, carrying wheeled vehicles, horse-keeping and, most researchers hold, the Indo-European languages westward with the Corded Ware and eastward with the Afanasievo.
The expansion left steppe-related ancestry as the third great component of every European population, highest in the north and east and lowest in Sardinia and the southern Mediterranean, and through the Sintashta and Andronovo horizons it reached Iran and South Asia (Allentoft et al. 2015). In the model it is itself a mixture of the Eastern Hunter Gatherer and Caucasian Hunter Gatherer sources, so the three overlap; the model will often express steppe ancestry through this single source rather than through its parents.
