The Ancient Greek source spans the Mycenaean palace kingdoms, the Dark Age and the Classical city-states of the mainland. Genomes from Mycenaean burials showed a population largely descended from the Anatolian-related farmers of the Aegean Neolithic, with a Caucasus- or Iranian-related contribution shared with the Minoans and a smaller steppe-related component that the Minoans lacked (Lazaridis et al. 2017). Later Bronze Age individuals from the mainland confirm that mixture and show the steppe-related share varying from region to region (Clemente et al. 2021).

Present-day Greeks are among the closest living populations to these samples, and the Classical colonies carried the same ancestry to Sicily, southern Italy, the Black Sea coast and Cyrenaica, where it remains part of the local heritage. In the model it lies between the Aegean source, which represents the later Roman-era population of the same region, and the more northerly Illyrian and Thracian sources of the Balkans.
