The Insular Celts are the Iron Age inhabitants of Britain and Ireland — the tribes the Romans met in Britain and the ancestors of the Gaelic, Brittonic and Pictish speakers of the early medieval Isles. Ancient genomes show a population descended overwhelmingly from the Bell Beaker settlers who had arrived around 2400 BC and replaced most of the Neolithic inhabitants, with a further Bronze Age inflow from the continent that raised the farmer-related share in Britain, and a striking matrilocal social structure at some Iron Age sites (Olalde et al. 2018; Patterson et al. 2022).

This ancestry is the principal heritage of present-day Irish, Welsh, Scots and Cornish and a large layer in the English beneath the Anglo-Saxon and later contributions, and through emigration it is widespread in North America and Australasia. In the model it is closest to the Continental Celt source, from which it differs in its lower farmer-related share, and to the Germanic source, from which it differs in its lower steppe-related share.
