Imperial Rome was the largest city of the ancient world, and ancient DNA shows its population was as cosmopolitan as the sources suggest. Genomes from Rome and its hinterland reveal a marked shift at the transition from Republic to Empire: the Iron Age population of central Italy was overlain by immigrants from the eastern Mediterranean and the Near East, drawn by the capital and its ports, so that the average Imperial-era individual resembled a Greek, Cypriot or Levantine more than a Latin (Antonio et al. 2019). Genomes from Pompeii and from Etruria confirm the same eastern inflow across the peninsula (Posth et al. 2021).

This ancestry survives most strongly in southern Italy and Sicily, where the eastern Mediterranean contribution remained after the western empire's fall, and in reduced measure in central and northern Italy, where later Lombard and other northern contributions shifted the population back westward. In the model it lies between the Latin and Etruscan source, describing the pre-Imperial peninsula, and the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean sources from which the newcomers came.
