The Illyrians were the Bronze and Iron Age peoples of the western Balkans, from the Dalmatian coast and the Dinaric mountains to present-day Albania and Montenegro, known through Greek and Roman writers and their own hillforts and tumulus cemeteries. Ancient genomes from the region show a population combining Neolithic farmer, steppe-related and hunter-gatherer ancestry in Balkan proportions — more farmer than the north, less than the Aegean — that remained largely stable from the Bronze Age until the Roman conquest (Lazaridis et al. 2022; Olalde et al. 2023).

Illyrian-related ancestry is a substantial pre-Slavic layer in present-day Albanians, Croatians, Bosnians, Montenegrins and Serbs, and reaches across the Adriatic into Italy through Roman-era mobility. In the model it sits between the Thracian source to its east and the Latin and Etruscan source across the sea, and it is the closest ancient source to the later Proto Albanian.
