The early medieval Slavs emerged from the forest zone of Eastern Europe and, from the sixth century, spread across the Balkans, Central Europe and the East European plain in one of the largest demographic movements of the first millennium. Ancient genomes from the Balkans document the shift directly: a substantial eastern European ancestry, closest to present-day Poles, Belarusians and Ukrainians, appears after the collapse of Roman rule and remains a major component of the region today (Olalde et al. 2023; Antonio et al. 2024).

This ancestry is the majority heritage of Poland, Ukraine, Belarus and Russia and a large layer in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria, and it reaches in smaller measure into Greece, Albania, Romania and eastern Germany. In the model it is the eastern European pole of the era, closely related to the Baltic source and distinct from the older Balkan sources — Illyrian, Thracian and Moesian — that it overlays.
