The Thracians were the Iron Age peoples of the eastern Balkans — present-day Bulgaria, European Turkey, northern Greece and southern Romania — known for their gold-rich tombs, their horsemen and their kingdoms of the Odrysians and Getae. Ancient genomes from the region show a Bronze Age Balkan population of Neolithic farmer, steppe-related and hunter-gatherer ancestry, with a higher steppe-related share than the Aegean to the south and an Iranian- or Caucasus-related component that had arrived through Anatolia and the Black Sea (Lazaridis et al. 2022; Olalde et al. 2023).

Thracian-related ancestry is the pre-Roman and pre-Slavic foundation of present-day Bulgarians, Romanians and northern Greeks, and a related layer in Macedonians and Serbs. In the model it is the eastern Balkan pole of the era, between the Illyrian source to its west, the Ancient Greek and Aegean sources to its south and the Pontic source across the Black Sea.
