The Germanic source represents the Iron Age and Migration Period population of southern Scandinavia, Denmark and the North German plain — the world of the tribes Tacitus described and the homeland from which the Angles, Saxons, Franks, Goths and Lombards set out. Ancient genomes from the region show a population of the northern European type, with a high steppe-related share and relatively low Neolithic farmer ancestry, that was genetically stable from the Bronze Age through the Roman period and closely matches the migrants who reached Britain in the fifth and sixth centuries (Gretzinger et al. 2022; Antonio et al. 2024).

This ancestry is the foundation of present-day Scandinavians, Dutch, northern Germans and English, and a substantial layer in Austria, northern France and northern Italy through the Migration Period kingdoms. In the model it is the north-western pole of European variation, distinct from the Continental and Insular Celt sources in its higher steppe-related share and from the Baltic source in its lower hunter-gatherer share.
