The Saami are the indigenous people of northern Fennoscandia, and this source represents their Iron Age forerunners from the Kola Peninsula, Lapland and the Bothnian coast. Ancient genomes from the region show a population combining a northern European base with the strongest Siberian-related ancestry found anywhere in Europe, an eastern component that arrived across the forest belt during the Bronze and Iron Ages and that Iron Age individuals from Levänluhta in Finland already carried in Saami-like proportions (Lamnidis et al. 2018).

This ancestry survives in the present-day Saami, in reduced measure among Finns and Karelians and, as a small layer, among northern Norwegians and Swedes and the Komi and other Uralic peoples of the Russian north. In the model it is the north-eastern-most pole of European variation, beyond the Finno-Ugric Volga source in its Siberian-related share and far from the Germanic source that neighbours it geographically.
