The Continental Celts are the Iron Age peoples of Gaul, the Alps and Central Europe associated with the Hallstatt and La Tène cultures, the Gauls of Caesar's wars and the tribes whose names survive in Paris, Bohemia and Belgium. Ancient genomes from France, Germany and Austria show a population of the Bronze Age European kind — a stable mixture of steppe-related, Neolithic farmer and hunter-gatherer ancestry — organised in kin groups and largely continuous with the preceding Urnfield and Bell Beaker inhabitants (Brunel et al. 2020; Fischer et al. 2022).

This ancestry is the principal heritage of present-day France, Belgium, Switzerland, southern Germany and the Alpine region, and a substantial layer in Britain, northern Italy and Iberia through Celtic expansion and later Roman-era mobility. In the model it sits between the Insular Celt source, its closest relative, and the Germanic and Iberian sources on either side.
