The Iron Age population of the Volga and Oka forests is the archaeological forerunner of the Mari, Mordvins and other Volga-Finnic speakers and a relative of the ancestors of Finns and Estonians. Ancient genomes from the region show a European base of the eastern Corded Ware kind with a substantial Siberian-related component that spread westward across the forest belt during the Bronze and Iron Ages, the same eastern inflow that brought Y haplogroup N to the Baltic and Fennoscandia (Lamnidis et al. 2018; Saag et al. 2019).

This ancestry survives most strongly today among the Volga-Finnic and Permic peoples, in Finns and Karelians, and as a substantial layer in northern and central Russians, who absorbed the Finno-Ugric population of the forest zone during the medieval Slavic expansion. In the model it is the source that carries the eastern, Siberian-related side of northern European variation, sitting beyond the Baltic source and short of the Saami.
