The Canaanites were the Bronze Age inhabitants of the southern Levant, living in walled cities such as Megiddo, Hazor, Abel Beth Maacah and Tel Shadud and in the coastal towns between them. Their genomes, sequenced from dozens of burials across the region, show a remarkably uniform population: a Levantine Neolithic base of Natufian-related ancestry blended with a substantial Iranian- or Caucasus-related component that had been arriving since the Chalcolithic, and that continued to trickle in through the Bronze Age (Haber et al. 2017; Agranat-Tamir et al. 2020). The Chalcolithic cave burials of Peqi'in already carried part of this mixture together with a small Anatolian-related share (Harney et al. 2018).

Canaanite ancestry is the deepest layer of nearly every population of the region today. It passed almost unchanged into the Iron Age Israelites and Phoenicians and into the Roman-era Levant, and it is the largest single ancestral component in present-day Lebanese, Palestinians, Jordanians, Syrians and Druze. Among Jewish communities it is the shared thread: Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi and Yemenite genomes all draw a large part of their ancestry from a population like this one, with later admixture from southern Europe, Iran, Arabia or the Caucasus laid on top (Agranat-Tamir et al. 2020; Waldman et al. 2022).

Y haplogroups J1, J2, E1b1b and T, and mtDNA H, K, T, J and HV, are common in these samples. A haplogroup alone is never evidence of a share.
